Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
